Press Conference Held by ENFF & CECAFA President Mr Paulos W/Haimanot

Today, the President of the Eritrean National Football Federation (ENFF) and the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) conducted a press conference in Asmara. He provided valuable insights regarding the upcoming matches against Kenya and South Africa. Mr. Paulos W/Haimanot expressed enthusiasm for the first match scheduled to take place in Nairobi against the Kenya National Team on September 26, 2026, followed by a significant encounter with South Africa in Cairo on September 30, 2026.

Mr Paulos elaborated on the extensive preparations underway for the Eritrean National Team, which is currently composed of a talented squad of 30 players. The selection of this squad is particularly critical, as fierce competition ensues among the players vying for a coveted spot in the final 18-man roster. This dynamic roster features an array of highly skilled and technically proficient athletes, which presents a significant challenge for both the Head Coach and the Technical Team as they work to finalise the starting lineup for the highly anticipated match against Kenya. In light of its recent performances, particularly following two matches against Eswatini, the team has made a strategic decision to incorporate new players across all positions. This refreshing approach has introduced fresh talent in crucial areas, including the goalkeeper, defensive line, midfield, and forward positions. The Eritrean National Team has a relatively young demographic, with an average age of 22 to 25 years. Despite their youth, the squad includes experienced players who bring invaluable insight and leadership. Notable figures include Tesfaldet Tekie, Nahom Natabay, and Ali Suleman, each of whom has contributed significantly to the team’s development and competitive edge. Additionally, Mr Paulos shared his vision for the future of Eritrean football, including plans to establish additional national teams, such as U-20 and U-17 squads for males. He also emphasised the importance of promoting women’s football by preparing to launch a national women’s team in the near future, showing a commitment to developing talent across all levels and genders in the sport.
